Visitor Tips

Drive on the Left

In Jamaica, you must drive on the left-hand side of the road, except when overtaking. This is especially important on narrow rural roads where lane markings may not be visible. (At Epic Car Rental, we offer both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive vehicles to suit your preference.)

Parking in the City

When in built-up areas like Montego Bay’s Hip Strip, look for official paid parking spots. These areas are strictly monitored during designated hours. Parking permits are widely available in nearby stores—just place yours on the dashboard facing up.

Emergency Contacts

The national emergency number in Jamaica is 119, though 911 may also work. However, it’s wise to save direct numbers for local ambulance, police, and fire stations. If you rent a mobile phone add-on with your car, you’ll find important Montego Bay emergency numbers pre-saved for your convenience.

Currency Matters

For small purchases like gas, groceries, or souvenirs, it's cheaper to use Jamaican dollars ($JMD). Exchange foreign currency at cambios or banks, as they offer better rates than credit card point-of-sale conversions.

Credit Cards Are Widely Accepted

Most businesses—including restaurants, gas stations, and retail stores—accept major credit cards. When you book an Epic Car Rental VIP Airport Pickup, we can process your card on the spot, so you can skip the rental office entirely!

Banking Hours

Plan ahead! Banks in Jamaica close early—by 2:30 PM (Mon-Thurs) and 4 PM (Fri). Only a few branches island-wide open on Saturdays. Call ahead to confirm, and avoid long end-of-month lines.

Market Days = Heavy Traffic

On Fridays and Saturdays, streets near Municipal Markets (like Montego Bay’s Charles Gordon Market) become pedestrian-heavy. If you're exploring the markets, park in a designated lot and walk. Otherwise, steer clear of these areas to avoid gridlock.

No Smoking in Public Spaces

A 2013 regulation bans cigarette smoking in many public places across Jamaica. As for marijuana, it was decriminalized in 2015, but tourists may need an airport-issued permit to fill local prescriptions.

Bug Spray is Essential

Jamaica's tropical climate means mosquito repellent is a must. If you forgot yours, buy some ASAP—better safe than sorry!

Hands-Free Driving Only

A 2016 Road Traffic Bill enforces a fine of approximately $250 USD for using a mobile phone while driving. Pull over if you need to take a call.

Know Your Taxes

Jamaica’s General Consumption Tax (GCT) is 15% (reduced from 16.5% in 2020). Other taxes include:

  • Guest Accommodation Room Tax (GART): USD $1–$4 per night (varies by hotel size)

  • Departure Tax: USD $35 per person

Need a Lawyer? Verify Credentials

If you're dealing with real estate transactions or need a pre-nup, check the General Legal Council's website for a list of licensed attorneys. The site also lists fines and disciplinary actions since 1985—so you can do your due diligence.
